Varicocele embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins in the pelvis by blocking abnormal blood flow. When veins in the pelvic region become enlarged and twisted, they can cause persistent pain and discomfort. In women, this condition is known as pelvic congestion syndrome, while in men, it manifests as varicoceles. Rather than removing these problematic veins surgically, embolization uses tiny coils or other blocking agents to seal them off, redirecting blood through healthier vessels and alleviating symptoms.
Varicoceles affect 15% to 30% of men and overwhelmingly occur on the left side due to differences in how blood drains from each testicle. While many men with varicoceles experience no symptoms at all, others deal with a persistent dull ache, heaviness or visible swelling in the scrotum. Beyond pain, varicoceles are among the most commonly identified and correctable causes of male infertility, found in roughly 40% of men seeking evaluation for fertility issues. The condition can impair sperm production by raising testicular temperature, and some research suggests it may also contribute to lower testosterone levels over time.
