What Is Hip Embolization?

Hip embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces pain by blocking abnormal blood vessels in the hip. Similar to genicular artery embolization for knee pain, this procedure targets the blood vessels feeding inflammation in the synovial lining of the hip joint, reducing blood flow to these areas without affecting healthy tissue. By decreasing inflammation at its source, hip embolization can provide substantial pain relief and improve your mobility.

How Does Hip Embolization Work?

During the procedure, our interventional radiologist makes a tiny puncture in the skin to access an artery, typically in the groin area. Using fluoroscopic guidance, a small catheter is threaded through the blood vessels until it reaches the arteries supplying the inflamed hip tissue. Tiny particles are then injected through the catheter to block these vessels, reducing blood flow to the inflamed areas while preserving circulation to healthy tissue. This process takes approximately one to two hours to complete and is performed under conscious sedation.

Ideal Candidates for Hip Embolization

Hip embolization may be right for you if you:

  • Experience chronic hip pain that hasn’t responded to more conservative treatments
  • Want to avoid or delay hip replacement surgery
  • Have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis
  • Are seeking a minimally invasive alternative to surgical intervention
  • Have inflammatory conditions affecting the hip joint

What to Expect During Treatment

Before your procedure, you’ll meet with one of our specialists for a comprehensive evaluation, which may include advanced imaging to pinpoint the source of your pain. On the day of treatment, you’ll receive local anesthesia and mild sedation to keep you comfortable throughout. Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure, and many experience immediate relief. Afterward, no stitches are required — just a small bandage covering the entry point.

Hip Embolization Recovery

One of the greatest advantages of hip embolization is the quick recovery time. You can return home later the same day and can resume normal activities within 24-48 hours. You may experience mild soreness at the puncture site or temporary bruising, but these effects typically resolve quickly. Unlike surgery, there’s no lengthy rehabilitation period, and many patients report significant pain reduction within days of the procedure.
