How Does Ovarian Vein Embolization Work?

During ovarian vein embolization, our interventional radiologists access the ovarian veins through a small nick in the skin, typically at the neck or groin. Using advanced imaging guidance, a thin catheter is threaded through your blood vessels until it reaches the target area, deploying embolic agents to block the abnormal vein. This minimally invasive approach means no large incisions, no stitches and significantly less downtime than traditional surgery.

Ideal Candidates for Ovarian Vein Embolization

Ovarian vein embolization may be right for you if you:

• Experience chronic pelvic pain that worsens with standing
• Have pain that intensifies during or after intercourse
• Notice increased discomfort before or during menstruation
• Have been diagnosed with pelvic congestion syndrome

What to Expect During Treatment

Ovarian vein embolization is performed on an outpatient basis under moderate sedation. The procedure typically takes one to two hours to complete. During treatment, you’ll lie comfortably on an exam table while your interventional radiologist uses real-time imaging to guide the catheter into position. Most patients report only mild discomfort during the procedure, and afterward, you’ll rest briefly before going home later the same day.
