Chronic joint and musculoskeletal pain can make even simple movements feel like a challenge. When medications, physical therapy and injections stop providing relief, many patients assume surgery is their only remaining option. At the Orange County Interventional Radiology Center in Lake Forest, Irvine and Mission Viejo, CA, we offer transarterial musculoskeletal embolization, an innovative, minimally invasive procedure that targets the underlying cause of chronic pain and helps restore function without the risks and recovery time of traditional surgery.

What Is Transarterial Musculoskeletal Embolization?

Transarterial musculoskeletal embolization is a catheter-based procedure that treats chronic musculoskeletal pain by reducing abnormal blood vessel growth in and around damaged joints and tissues. Osteoarthritis, tendonitis and other chronic inflammatory conditions trigger the formation of new blood vessels that carry pain-signaling nerves into affected areas. By blocking blood flow to these vessels, transarterial musculoskeletal embolization reduces inflammation and interrupts the pain cycle at its source.

This technique has been used successfully to treat chronic pain in the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle and hand, particularly in patients who haven’t responded to conservative treatments or who want to avoid or delay joint replacement surgery.

Ideal Candidates for Transarterial Musculoskeletal Embolization

Transarterial musculoskeletal embolization may be right for you if:

  • You have chronic joint or tendon pain that hasn’t improved with other treatments
  • You’ve been diagnosed with mild to moderate osteoarthritis
  • You want to avoid or delay joint replacement surgery
  • You are not a good candidate for surgery due to age or other health conditions
  • You have tried other treatments without lasting relief

Transarterial musculoskeletal embolization isn’t appropriate for everyone. Patients with active infections, severe end-stage arthritis, vascular disease or bleeding disorders may need alternative treatments. Our team will review your imaging and medical history to determine whether this treatment option is right for you.

What to Expect During Treatment

Transarterial musculoskeletal embolization is performed as an outpatient procedure at our Orange County facilities. During the procedure, your interventional radiologist numbs the treatment area and inserts a small catheter through a tiny puncture in the skin, typically at the wrist or groin. Using real-time imaging, the catheter is guided through the blood vessels to the arteries supplying the painful area. Once in position, embolic agents are injected to block the blood vessels feeding the inflammation.

The entire procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. You’ll remain comfortable throughout with local anesthesia and sedation. Once the targeted vessels have been treated, the catheter is removed, and a small bandage is applied. No stitches are needed, and you’re free to return home the same day to begin the recovery process.

Transarterial Musculoskeletal Embolization

You’ll be able to go home shortly after your procedure. Most patients can return to light activities the next day, with only mild soreness or bruising at the catheter insertion site. You should notice relief from pain and stiffness within just a few days, with continued improvement for several months as inflammation subsides. These results can last for up to two years, although duration may vary depending on the severity of your case, activity levels and other individual factors.
