What Is Venoplasty?

Venoplasty, also known as venous angioplasty and balloon angioplasty of the veins, is a minimally invasive procedure that opens narrowed or blocked veins to improve blood flow. Using advanced imaging guidance, our specialists insert a small catheter with a balloon into the affected vein. When inflated, the balloon pushes against the walls of the vein, widening the passage for blood to flow more freely. In some cases, we may place a stent — a small mesh scaffold — to keep the vein open after the procedure.

How Does Venoplasty Work?

During a venoplasty procedure, our interventional radiologist makes a tiny incision in the skin to access the venous system. Using real-time imaging, the catheter is carefully guided through your blood vessels until it reaches the narrowed or blocked vein. Once properly positioned, the balloon is inflated to compress the blockage against the vein walls. The balloon is then deflated and removed. Occasionally a stent may also be necessary to maintain the newly opened pathway.

Ideal Candidates for Venoplasty

Venoplasty can be an excellent option for patients suffering from various venous conditions. You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have chronic venous insufficiency that hasn’t responded to conservative treatments
  • Experience leg pain, swelling or skin changes due to poor venous drainage
  • Have been diagnosed with May-Thurner syndrome or other venous compression disorders
  • Suffer from post-thrombotic syndrome following deep vein thrombosis
  • Need dialysis access maintenance for narrowed veins

Before recommending any treatment, our specialists will evaluate your needs and medical history to determine if venoplasty is right for you. As a nonsurgical procedure, venoplasty is generally considered safe and effective for most patients with narrowed or blocked veins.

What to Expect During Treatment

Venoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with mild sedation, meaning you’ll be awake but relaxed. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure, which usually takes between 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the complexity of your case. Once complete, you’ll be able to return home later the same day.

Venoplasty Recovery

Venoplasty involves a quick recovery time compared to traditional surgery. Most patients can resume normal activities within 24-48 hours, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for about a week. You may experience some mild bruising or soreness at the entry site, which typically resolves within a few days. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and schedule a follow-up appointment within a few weeks to monitor your progress and ensure optimal results.
